Cattle and farm work – February and early March 2020
We semen re-tested and morphology assessed the six bulls and they didn’t pass so they will now head elsewhere than any breeding paddocks!
The P heifers (who will start calving on 12th April) have been given their booster vaccination of Ultravac 7 in 1; the Q heifers have been given the first of two vaccinations of Ultravac 7 in 1 and Pestigard.
The P heifers have also been freeze branded instead of being tattooed in their ear (which can be increasingly difficult to read if they lose their ear and/or NLIS tags in later years). Their NLIS tags were also inserted and their ear chipped.
Other work has included making some cocky gates to replace ones required for the new boundary fence and replacing some internal paddock fences – an ongoing project, mostly using the Weston Fence system (photo above). The system comprises a star picket every ten metres with a dropper and two droppers in between. Of the seven wires, there’s four earth wires and three live wires; an earth on top, then live, then earth, then live then earth, then live, then earth on the bottom.
